Shurdhah Island – The Hidden Treasure in the Heart of the Drin
Shurdhah Island, also known as Sarda Island, is a hidden gem in the Drin River, near Vau i Dejës. This island holds extraordinary historical and cultural wealth, attracting visitors from all over Albania and beyond thanks to its archaeological significance and breathtaking natural beauty.
The island is strategically located among some of Albania’s most famous castles: Rozafa Castle, Gajtan Castle, Danjë Castle, and Dalmatia Castle. These fortifications are rich in prehistoric history and intriguing legends, enriching this exceptional area.
In Shurdhah, visitors can explore the ruins of the ancient city of Sarda, a settlement with a history dating back to the Illyrian period and later the Byzantine and medieval periods. The remains include Byzantine-style churches, defensive walls, and other historic structures. Interestingly, the old city was built on two levels: the upper city, still above water, and the lower city, now submerged under the Drin.
According to ancient writings, the island once housed 365 temples, one for each day of the year, making Sarda a significant spiritual and cultural symbol. Until the end of the 15th century, Sarda was a major cultural center and a meeting point for three important northern cultures: those of Malësia, Mirdita, and Zadrima. These cultures, with their unique characteristics, have endured through the centuries, resisting foreign influences.
Moreover, the island has a special connection to the prominent Dukagjini feudal family, with Leka Dukagjini known as the author of the famous Kanun rules that guided Albanian life for centuries.
Today, Shurdhah Island is a favored tourist destination for those seeking to combine nature and history. Visitors can enjoy hiking, fishing, or excursions to historical ruins, experiencing a journey through time amidst natural beauty and the monuments of the past.
Shurdhah Island is not only a peaceful and beautiful place but also a testament to Albania’s historical and cultural heritage, deserving of appreciation and visitation by all.
